How to compare two painting quotes

To compare two painting quotes, first check that they cover the same surfaces and work. The total is difficult to interpret if one includes wall preparation and the other only painting. Make a short list of differences and request written clarification before choosing a company.

Put the painting quotes on the same basis

  1. Match the rooms, walls, ceilings, woodwork and other included items. Check quantities and how they were assessed. Ask for any missing part of the scope to be added.
  2. Compare the stated preparation: protection, removal of coverings, planned repairs and treatment of visible defects. Describe a stain or crack without assuming what caused it.
  3. Ask for the products, finish, colours and planned applications to be specified. Discuss how to agree on a sample if you have not yet chosen a colour.
  4. Compare furniture moving, access, use of rooms and final cleaning. Record the proposed dates and the information needed to confirm them.

Clarify each difference

Use four columns: item, first quote, second quote, question. For example: “floor protection: included / not stated / needs confirmation”. Also compare options, exclusions, payment terms and how additional work is handled. If a service is missing, request an identifiable addition instead of estimating its cost yourself.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing solely on the total price.
  • Treating an unlisted item as an included service.
  • Agreeing to colour or scope changes without clarifying their effect on the quote.

Documents to prepare

  • Both complete quotes, including attachments and their dates.
  • The common description sent to the companies and photographs of the surfaces.
  • The list of areas, desired finishes and answers to your questions.

Prepare your project

Use the same description when preparing another request. Mention connected work if the painting belongs to a wider renovation.
